IT Manager

Global Rail Construction Ltd is part of the Global Infrastructure Group and is a leading UK provider of design and build services to clients in the rail and transportation sector.

We are seeking an Information Technology Manager to join our team to provide technical supervision and manage IT interface and implementation for our employees. This role will be responsible for fulfilling requests in our service desk. Common support requests include provisioning/de-provisioning of accounts and hardware. Support mainly iOS hardware and printer configuration/troubleshooting. We also expect this position/team to support development of key technology and applications to assist and improve the overall efficiency of the business.

With the task of overseeing all IT functions of the company, the IT Manager needs to have expert knowledge of the industry’s best practices and stay up-to-date with advances. You will be working with our external IT support organisation to monitor and maintain the computer systems as well as the networks within our organisation.

You will be at the very busy front-line, dealing directly with employees who have technical issues such as forgotten passwords, viruses or email issues. Tasks may include:

  • Installing and configuring computer systems
  • Diagnosing and solving hardware/software faults
  • Logging customer/employee queries
  • Setting-up of laptops, PC and Tablets to access our innDex digitalisation platform
  • Analysing call logs to spot trends and underlying issues


  • Maintaining essential IT operations, including operating systems, security tools, applications, servers, email systems, laptops, desktops, software, and hardware
  • Owning projects, solutions, and key responsibilities within a larger business initiative
  • Handling business-critical IT tasks and systems administration
  • Researching and evaluating emerging technologies, hardware, and software
  • Tracking and maintaining hardware and software inventory
  • Consulting computer users to ascertain needs and to ensure that facilities meet user or project requirements
  • Selecting and purchasing appropriate hardware and software
  • Managing IT budgets
  • Ensuring software licensing compliance
  • Implementing and managing security or integrity and backup procedures
  • Scheduling upgrades
  • Providing user training, support, advice and feedback
  • Testing and modifying systems to ensure that that they operate reliably
  • Managing secure network access for remote users
  • Keeping up to date with new technology
  • Designing maintenance procedures and putting them into operation
  • Training new staff

Role Requirements:

  • A self-starter, ability to multitask, prioritise issues based on severity and work independently
  • Maintaining a high attention to detail and follows a task to completion
  • Approaching user issues with empathy
  • An ability to communicate clearly with users directly via email, chat and, video conferencing
  • Demonstration of excellent writing skills
  • An ability to troubleshoot and administer computers and mobile devices
  • Basic understanding of wired and wireless networks
  • Experience with Chrome Meeting device configuration and troubleshooting
  • 5+ years providing technical support

Skills and experience:

  • Ability to assess and recruit top candidates, train new IT staff, supervise and motivate team members for high performance
  • Experience coordinating installations, upgrades, and maintenance
  • Experience with or knowledge of programming languages and operating systems (MS Exchange, Active Directory, and other Windows- based system performance monitoring
  • Expertise with implementing, configuring, and testing solutions
  • Skills to understand and oversee code development
  • Professional certification
